Breaking It Down: Hair Growth Cycles & Why Electrolysis Works

If you’ve ever plucked a hair only to see it pop back up a few weeks later, you’re not imagining things—your hair is simply doing its job! To understand why electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, it helps to know a little about how hair grows. Let’s break it down.
The Three Phases of Hair Growth
Your hair doesn’t just grow continuously—it follows a cycle with three distinct phases:
1. Anagen (Active Growth Phase)
This is where the magic happens. During the anagen phase, the hair is actively growing and still attached to the follicle’s blood supply. This is the prime time for electrolysis because the current can effectively target and destroy the follicle, preventing future growth.
2. Catagen (Transition Phase)
In this short phase, the hair stops growing and begins to detach from the follicle. Since it’s no longer connected to the blood supply, electrolysis is less effective during this stage.
3. Telogen (Resting Phase)
The hair is completely detached and will eventually shed, making way for new growth. Electrolysis can’t effectively treat hairs in this phase since they are no longer rooted in the follicle.
Why Multiple Electrolysis Sessions Are Needed
Here’s the deal: not all of your hair is in the same phase at the same time. While some hairs are actively growing, others are resting or preparing to shed. This is why a series of electrolysis treatments is necessary—so we can catch more hairs in the anagen phase, when the treatment is most effective.
Patience Pays Off
Electrolysis is a process, but the results are worth it. As you progress through your sessions, you’ll notice thinner, finer, and fewer hairs until they eventually stop growing altogether. So, if you’re dreaming of ditching razors or tweezers for good, trust the process—it’s science, not magic (though it may feel like it when you’re hair-free!).
